The SAASIA Fonotele 2023, held under the theme “O le tele o sulu e maua ai figota,” united educators and community leaders in Wellington. The theme signifies that continuous collaboration will lead to effective solutions, akin to torches guiding a catch. The conference centered on the vital role of the Samoan language in modern education, emphasising its integration with cultural values in educational strategies.

The first day commenced with a spiritually uplifting lotu led by Fa’afeagaiga Vaegaau Liko from EFKS Upper Hutt, setting a contemplative tone for the event. This was followed by the official opening by Honourable Aupito Toeolesulusulu Tofae Su’a William Sio, who shared a compelling message with attendees. Emphasizing his commitment to the cause, Hon. Sio assured everyone, “I am not going anywhere. I will be around to help in any way I could.” This declaration reinforced the conference’s dedication to fostering enduring partnerships in education and cultural preservation.

After the opening remarks, Reno Paotonu from the Ministry of Education took the stage, offering insightful perspectives that further anchored the day’s discussions. This was complemented by a foundational talk from Susuga Sofaea Penn, the Chair of SAASIA. Susuga Penn’s speech, rich in insights and directives, set a strong tone for the conference, underlining the importance of integrating Samoan language and cultural heritage in modern educational practices. Her address was a testament to SAASIA’s commitment to these goals.

The presence of teachers from Aoga Amata in New Zealand added diverse experiences and perspectives to the proceedings. Dr. Sarah Te One, in her keynote speech, delved into educational pedagogy from a Samoan perspective, highlighting the need for culturally responsive teaching methodologies that resonate with the unique learning experiences of Samoan children.

Further enriching the discussions, Salā Dr Pafitimai Fa’asaulala Tagoilelagi-Leota and Kenese Misiuepa presented ‘Pepe Meamea,’ delving into the indigenous conceptualisations of children and childhood in Samoan culture.

The first day also featured a vibrant debate on Samoa’s educational priorities, reflecting diverse viewpoints on the future of education. The launch of SAASIA’s Digital Resource marked a significant step towards integrating technology with traditional learning methods.

The second day began with a lotu led by Susuga Fa’afeagaiga Nu’ualiitia Fafo Aulalo, followed by Dr. Saili Aukuso’s keynote on Samoan phonological awareness. Workshops led by Tualoaina Latu Toomaga and Merini Mauga offered deep dives into Samoan culture in education.

Irene Paleai-Foroti, the Director of SAASIA, alongside Noama Timoteo and Asofa Gafoi, discussed ‘Tōfā O Iloiloga’ and its significance in educational strategy, emphasising holistic development in education.

The conference concluded with reflective sessions that synthesised key themes and learnings, focusing on the integration of the Samoan language into education. These discussions reinforced the event’s central message and highlighted the conference’s success in intertwining language preservation with modern educational paradigms.

The SAASIA Fonotele 2023 marked a significant step in honouring Samoan heritage and embedding the Samoan language into contemporary educational practices. It underscored the importance of linguistic and cultural understanding in education, setting a transformative path for future generations in the Samoan community.
